Lyle R. Walton, 77, of Ronan died at St. Patrick Hospital April 22, of complications following a heart attack and traffic accident.
He was born in Minot, N.D. to Etta May (McGray) and Alfred Walton on July 8, 1920. He received his education at Glenburn, N.D. He married Florence Steen at Glenburn on Aug. 15, 1942. He was drafted into the Army in September 1942 and served as a cook and baker at Army camps in Pratt, Kan., and Grand Island, Neb.
After his discharge from the Army he lived in Glenburn and bought grain at the Occident Elevators in the area. He also worked at maintenance on the Great Northern Railway tracks and delivered industrial gases in western North Dakota. He was the first caretaker of the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Minot; he planted the initial landscaping at that cemetery.
In 1957 the family moved to Richey where he was affiliated with the Farmers Union elevator. In 1960 they settled in the Ronan area where he worked at the Polson plywood mill for nine years. When the mill closed he did backhoe work around the Ronan area. After retirement he managed his own small ranch and wood lot. Lyle enjoyed working with horses, attending rodeos and visiting friends and neighbors at the local coffee shop.
He was very proud of his family and enjoyed watching them grow and mature and then watching his grandchildren in their various pursuits. He had a positive influence on the family.
He wil preceeded in death by his parents and brothers Max and Howard Walton,
He is survived by his wife Florence of Ronan; four daughters Ann and Herb Sias of Ronan, Mary and Ken McGann of Plains, Peggy and Jay Walton-Webster of Rochester, N.Y. and Claudia and Marion Reinhardt of Thompson Falls; four sons, Bill and Alice Walton of Florence, Jerry and Glenda Walton of Fayetteville, N.C., Craig Walton of Lewistown, Idaho and Rande Walton of Ronan. He is also survived by a sister Elizabeth of Portland Ore.; a brother Henry of El Segundo, Calif.; 25 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, at the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Ronan. Military graveside services followed at Calvary Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were by the Shrider's Mortuary in Ronan.
