Hi there,
You know, it seems like every Boone generation had fourteen or more kids and
then each of those kids had their own near fourteen. My Israel was the older
brother of Daniel. When Israel died, my next grandfather Jesse was only 8
years old when Daniel and his new wife of less than 2 or 3 months took them
in. Matter of fact, Daniel and Rebecca took in about a dozen kids for
Israel. I really like the Boone family history and their loyalty to each
other. But, you can see an age gap with so many children. Maybe that is the
problem with your family that is hard to understand.
This is my line: Israel (elder brother to Daniel the pioneer), then Jesse
then another Israel whose daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) married Hiram Medaris
in McMinn County, Tennessee. Their daughter Virginia married James Murphy
and they are found on the 1880 census of Marion County, Tennessee with baby
Henry. I am double cousins many times to myself through the Boone/Medaris
marriages and probably even more through my Morphew/Boone marriages... if
indeed there is a Morphew connection. Definitely through James Murphy's
marriage to Virginia Medaris! There are many same first names in the Boone
family... many Israel and Daniel. And a lot of Boone descendants doing
research. I think I read that so far there are over a million people who can
claim a kinship. (It is really hard to find my mother's lines. Boone comes
through Daddy. I told my Mom it is too bad her people weren't love-making
fools so there would be a lot of descendants. Then hers would be easy to
find.)Hmm.
I am writing down your lines because I have a huge Boone book and it will
take me a little bit of time to look for the names. I have meant to put an
index of names but that takes time and I never get it done.
If I don't write stuff down, then I tend to forget that I was meaning to do
it. Hmm. Old age I reckon.
By the way, the Boone family started out as Quakers and were probably good
folks in the church. But Hannah (I think that is the correct daughter)
married outside the church and Squire was warned that he had to get the kids
in line to do better than that. Then Israel married a woman who we can't
find a name for because it is believed that she might have been an Indian.
It is then that Squire sided with the love of his children for the mates
that they chose and the family left the church. It is said that Israel and
his wife died of tuberculosis.
Thanks,
Polly
According to the census information, James Edward Murphy was born in the
early 1850's in Maryland to a father who came from Ireland and a mother
listed as from Virginia/West Virginia. Another census says he lived a time
in North Carolina. By the 1870/1880 period, he was married in Marion County,
Tennessee to Virginia Medaris. The Medaris family lived around Chattanooga
and in Georgia. By 1900, James and Virginia moved to Pope County, Arkansas.
The census enumerates the couple to have had 12 children but only 5 are
listed in Pope County: Henry M., age 21 who married Etta Stanley but who
also died in 1900, Jinetta (18) who married a Thresher, Poley (15) who
married Myrtle Carter, John (5) who married Merica Chambers and Gertrude (2)
who married Benjamine Sosbee. There may have been a connection to a Rachel
Wright whose descendants live around Chattanooga but I don't have a clue yet
as to what it is. They believe that James and Virginia had a son James but I
have never heard any of my family mention such a son. Could be. None of us
had ever heard of Jinetta either or the 12 children. James Edward Murphy
died in 1911 and is buried in Pope County, Arkansas next to Henry, John and
Virginia with a tombstone that says "Gone but not forgotten."
