I had a similar problem with a 'brick wall' ancestor, except I knew she did
exist as I had met her myself, she being 96 and I about 10 when she died. But
find her marriage record to my grgrandfather, I could not. Finally looked for
all of the marriages in IL for J C Laughlin with a Josephine. And there it was
SHIEPE instead of SHUPE. So with some ancestors, male, the female half of the
marriage can be the one that proves it happened! And I am trying to improve my
own handwriting.
