Fellow Murphy researchers....Thanks to all who have commented/replied to my
msge about my first visit to Ireland end of June 2008; tips from you,Larry
Haitz, especially helpful. No, I've not the faintest clue as to where in
Ireland my particular Murphy line hailed from. I did discover over the years two
conflicting alleged stories about our earliest Murphy people, both stories
being unconfirmed. One story states our earliest Murphy had his family destroyed
by Cromwell's Army, he retaliated then fled to America taking several of his
favorite animals (Horses?).....if true that means he traveled circa 1650 or so;
the other story states our earliest Murphy left Ireland circa 1750 more or
less, for he was tired of being persecuted for his Methodist beliefs. Frankly,
after ten years of steady searching, I'm left without enough clues/facts so
I'm unable to tell which if any story might be true. On the brighter side, my
g grand mother was an O'Reilly; her father was from Killashandra, Co Cavan.
I've met a living descendant of this O'Reilly line & hope to be able to visit
her on our trip. She also has a niece living in Cork, which will give us a
reason to visit that area as well.
In a different direction I've even managed to submit some of my DNA to
the Family Tree DNA firm in Texas (think that's where they're located); so far,
I've not discovered any Murphy matches, but weird thing is about half of the
many remote matches they've sent me have the surname McGregor. I'm totally
unaware of any McGregor's in my family tree other than perhaps over 300 plus
years & beyond 20 generations.
The trip is providing me with renewed energy in reviewing all my
accumulated Ireland materials which I've been stockpiling for ten years or more; what
fun! I suspect my two daughters that I travel with would be bored to tears
if I sit in a library for hours on end (which I do with some ease), so I doubt
if I do any serious research. Nevertheless, I will try to check in with the
Co Cavan Heritage Research Center in Cavan town just to see what materials they
do have.
So, again, many thanks to all for sharing your encouraging remarks.
