Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2001 12:28:23 -0400
For a friend I am seeking information on the orgins of Melchior Miers, a
Butcher and trustee of the German Lutheran
Church in Lexington, Kentucky in 1800. One branch of the family had a
legend that he came to America
in the mid-1700's, and that he had been a "german mercenary serving under
LaFayette" in th American
Revolution. The Kentucky Gazette was a Lexington, Kentucky newspaper.
1. Melchior Miers
Chronology:
June, 1792 - Melchior Miers advertises in THE KENTUCKY GAZETTE
that he is selling candles.
December, 1798 - Melchior Miers, a butcher, advertises in THE
KENTUCKY GAZETTE for people to pay their bills.
February, 1799 - George A. Webber publishes a notice regarding a
deed from Melchior Miers.
June 3, 1799 - THE KENTUCKY GAZETTE contains a notice regarding a
sale of the property of Melchior Miers, to satisfy his debts, by
Sheriff G. R. Tompkins. Jesse Beauchamp, John Blackmore, George
Young, and John Phillips are mentioned.
Aug 7 1799 - George Wiegert announces he is moving to Lexington
into a house formerly occupied by Jacob Kiser, next to Melchior
Miers on High Street. From THE KENTUCKY GAZETTE.
1800 - Melchior Miers is a trustee of the German Lutheran Church
in Lexington.
1800 - There is a hatter in Lexington named Peter Myers,
relationship unknown.
1801 - George Hytel, attorney-in-fact for Melchior Miers, calls
for debtors to pay their debts.
July 18, 1806 - Fayette County Circuit Court Deed Book A pg. 802,
Melchior Miers of Lexington has this day sold to Francis Krickel,
a saddler of Lexington, one horse, one mare and colt, one cart
and gears, one bureau, and one cow, for $90. Witnessed by Thomas
Ocheltree, George Wery, and T. Davis. Void if Miers shall repay
amount within 5 years. Entered Aug 13 1806.

selling a house, now occupied by Melchior Miers.
1810 - George A. Webber publishes a notice in THE KENTUCKY
GAZETTE that an indentured servant, Magdalena Miers, has run
away.
Date unknown - No death date is available for Melchior Miers, but
as a trustee of the German Lutheran Church he was probably buried
in the church lot at what is now the Methodist Church, 214 West
High Street in Lexington. It's said that some of the graves were
later moved to a Presbyterian Cemetery on North Limestone.
Aug 29 1825 - Christina McQuillen, William and Magdeline Sally,
Barbary Miers, and Sally and Silas McDermid convey to Francis
Krickel for $800 a lot in Lexington on the corner of Main Cross
and High Street in Lexington. 1. Begin at corner an run with Main
Cross 67 ft to the lot belonging to John Shedell, now the
property of Francis Krickel. 2. Thence at right angle with
Krickel's line 56 ft to the alley. 3. Thence with the alley 67 ft
to High Street. 4. Thence with High Streeet 56 ft to the
beginning. The same lot conveyed by George Hydel to all parties
in 1810. Signed with "marks" by Christina, Magdalena, and Barbary
Miers, and with the signatures of Sarah and Silas McDermid.
Christina, Magdalena, and Sarah are described as "late Miers."
Margin: Examined and given to owner October 9 1838.
Children of Melchior Miers:
2. i Catherine "Caty" Miers born cir ___ 00 1790.
ii Henry Myers married Oct 25 1809, in Fayette County,
Kentucky, Lydia Wall. Jonathon Pew mentioned on
marriage record. Need to review why I have Henry as
a child of Melchior Miers. It might be from the
marriage record. He was not a party to the 1825
deed of Melchior Miers heirs.
3. iii Christena Myers.
4. iv Mary Magdalena Miers born ___ 00 1798.
v Madoline Barbary Miers married Apr 13 1826, in

an 1825 deed of the Miers heirs to Francis Krinkle.
A year later Madoline Barbary Miers married Col.
James Madison Parker of the Northern Neck of
Virginia.
vi Sarah "Sally" Miers married Silas McDermid. Silas
and Sarah signed an 1825 document with the other
Miers, but I can find no McDermids in early Fayette
County Census records. In 1792 a Hugh McDermid is
settling the estate of his father, Francis McDermid
of Lexington.
Silas: There is no McDermid list in Fayette County
Censuses, 1810 - 1840.
1806 - August 6, 1806, Fayette County Deeds E, page
9 Elisha Warfield Jr. and Maria to James McClain, on

June 5, 1833 - THE KENTUCKY GAZETTE notes the death of Christina
McQuillen, widow of Thomas McQuillen, in a listing of cholera
victims during the 1833 cholera plague. The August 1 issue
mentions the death of a "Mrs. Myers" in Ward No. 4 in Fayette

v Francis McQuillen born ___ 00 1822, married Oct 14

run off (September 25 1810) If this is her, she would be about 12
years old. In 1799 George A. Webber had published a notice
regarding a deed by Melchior Miers. An October 2, 1799 entry in
the Kentucky Gazette shows that Webber was a baker. In another
