Subject: HOAX -- DO NOT FOLLOW DIRECTIONS! Re: [MarinGenSoc] Goldie's virusalert gm
Date: Tue, 1 Jun 2004 07:36:41 -0700 (GMT-07:00)
Dear Listers:
First, Goldie, thank you for being concerned for us and for our data.
However....
This is an old, known HOAX. Do NOT follow the directions or you will delete
one of your Windows Operating files. MACs do not have this file.
See what Microsoft has to say:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;322993
or Symantec:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/jdbgmgr.exe.file.hoax.html
http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_99436.htm
http://vmyths.com/
If you followed Goldie's kindhearted directions to remove this file, Microsoft
has remedies, which will be found on that same portion of their website.
Whereas I appreciate that y'all may have concerns for the safety of other's
computers and their data, posting of virus warnings is not to be done on this
list. Should you have a geniune concern that you may have infected others,
please contact me directly at my admin address of
tell me your situation and I will determine if information should be passed along
via the list.
When in doubt..... we are not all at the same "level" yet.... look it up. The Antiviral
sites have encylopaedias you can search for keywords in the warning text you
may receive from other good natured friends trying to save your hard drive from
gloom, doom and data loss. They also have newsletters you can subscribe to that
will alert you to the newests "baddies" out there.
Everyone subscribed to this list is *expected* to have their anti-viral software loaded,
on, and up to date. I update mine daily. If you don't, why not? The folks that create
viruses don't only release them on a weekly or monthly schedule..... make sure you are
protected and in turn, protect those you are in contact with. Remember the data you save
may be your own!
Good place to run an online scan:

Good free antivirus program:

Snopes has an excellent site that can help you sort out Urban Legends and Hoaxes
from fact. See: http://www.snopes.com A visit to the site can provide hours of
amusing reading, should you have nothing better to do from time to time. :) Other
than that, it is a great way to check out those message that have been 'round the
world a bazillion times, but new to your mail box.
Happy Trails,
Lauren
