Hi Jeanne,
Yes, Isbrandtsen was a large steamship company at one time. They also were a
part of AMERICAN EXPORT LINES at one time. And latter on the Farrell Lines,
bought out American Export Lines.

I so happen to have a book on Hans Isbrandtsen called AMERICAN VIKING. Which
indicated that the Whaling venture by Isbrandtsen with the ULYSSES there were
numerous European shipping relaated stock holders involved in the Western
Operators which was founded in 1936. And as Isbrandtsen couldn`t obtain a
loan to finance the ventue in the USA.Western Operating went to a London
Bank, which was acustomed to backing whalers and got the money

AS far as the ships were concerned, named FLYING this or that, I am also
familiar.I also happen to have been a Docking Master at one time dduring the
1950`s.And have docked many of his ships. In addition I am a HAM RADIO
operator, and naturally knew and talked to Captain Carlsen of the S.S.
Flying Enterprise, sinking in 1951.I was not taalking with Captain Carlseen
at the time of the sinking. If I can remember right( without pulling out old
records) I was on a trip arond the world.

It seemed like Isbrandsten was always engaged in some converse with the U.S.
Govn`t.And he was also able to enter into trade routes, that made him a lot of
money. So that he could have his farm on Long Island. Which supplied his
ships with meat etc. And his connections with the coffee trade, enabled him
to supply his ships with his own brand of coffee.

I had friends that sailed in his steamship line. And I have heard some
stories that he was hard to work for.If you were of the Dannish descent, you
made a quick promotion in the company.

Mr. Isbraaandsten, had a very colorfull background in the maritime field. And
there are many stories around the waterfront about him.

And I am sure that he kept the various P&I attorney`s busy.Along with the
better known Maritime Attorney`s.

Mr, Isbrandsten, was a shipowner and a merchant, all in one.
