Gilbert,
thank you for the information. And yes, every little bit helps. Now I
have found 3 of the 4 ships named in my grandfather's journal. The exact
date 1872, is taken from his statement "...at about 10 years of age went
with Uncle David in a wooden Barque Named the Westwood to Antiqua W Indies
& Belize British Honduras." Now mind you, this was written at the age of
86, so the issue of the captain is not surpising. At least I know the ship
existed. His uncle David Rees was a captain, I found him onboard the
TRITON, sailing from Cardigan to New York in 1841. Can you tell me if the
Westwood also carried emigrant passengers? If so, then there had to be a
document of passengers, correct? Well, now to find a crew and passenger
list.
As far as the City of Calisle, I located it at this site:
J L Thompson & Sons of Wearside at
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/2249/jlthom.html
See under Robert Thompson senior (179-1860), 6th para.
thanks to one of our listers. Check it out if you haven't visited it
before. It covers the company history and contains lots of ship names and
some specification. Another resource for your data bank.
As for T. Rees, on the Vanguard, I would appreciate any iformation you have
on that ship. The Rees family were from Cardigan mid Wales. So, it would
be nice to know where she was built, owner and home port etc.
thanks for your help
Reginald
