My grandfather, Fred McMahon, was the only survivor of the Esso
Greensborough of those who went into the ocean when it collided with the
Esso Suez on april 20, 1951--his 27th birthday, in fact. The event is
chronicled in part in Edward Rowe Snow's Great Gales and Dire Disasters. He
passed away in 1985 and I never had the chance to ask him much about it.
Could you provide details of the event, which occurred in the Gulf of
Mexico, and also of his service career. He was from Roxbury, MA and served
throughout the 1940's. He may have resigned/retired after the accident.
what other ships was he on and did he have any other ships go down under
him? my mom thinks he may have but it was when she was very young and none
of her family is alive to ask. did he play an active part in WWII? Is there
anyone from the suez who is still around and could share their memories?
born in boston april 20, 1924--died october 2, 1985
