Hello Pat,

Info on HMS VIVID, Shorebase and Barracks

HMS VIVID Shore Establishment, Barracks, Devonport.

Commissioned 1st. January 1890, renamed HMS DRAKE 1st. January 1934.

Barracks first occupied 4th. June 1889.

Nominal Ship*., VIVID (1883) Yacht, tender to HMS ROYAL ADELAIDE (Flag
Commander in Chief from 1st. January1890).

VIVID (ex CAPERCAILZIE) (1891). 1st. January 1892 - 20th November 1912
(sold) was Flag to 1900.

HMS CUCKOO (1873 ex Ant class gunboat) Nominal depot ship VIVID base became
VIVID II, 1920. sold 1958.

HMS CAMBRIAN (1893 ex Astraea class cruiser), renamed VIVID Sept 1921, sold
for breaking up 21st February 1923. ( also used as Stoker training ship
1916 - 1921 under the name of HARLECH).

HMS MARSHAL NEY (1915 ex Monitor) Nominal depot ship from June 1922 - 1st.
January 1934.


* Nominal ship. Officers and men not serving in a seagoing warship, were
allocated to a nominal ship, this was due to the fact, that before the 1st.
of January 1959, the Naval Discipline Act only applied to Officers and men
carried on the books of His/Her Majesty's Ships of war. Many of these
nominal ships had been old sailing ships of the line , hulked for
accomodation or training centres and their names retained, and later used
when the Establishment moved ashore.

HMS CORNWALL would this be the "Kent" class cruiser of 1926 - 1942 or the
"Monmouth" class cruiser 1902 - 1920.
