Dear All,
There seem to be mariners everywhere I look on my tree,
or at least somewhere on each branch.
I am asking this time on relatively more recent times- the RN in 1881
My ggrandfather came to Australia about 1887
and became a master butcher in Balmain Sydney.
He was described as a butcher on his wedding cert in 1888.
He was born in Bermondsey London c 1863
I found him in 1881 Census Greater London
on Vessel:H.M.S."Penelope"
Census Place:Harwick St Nicholas, Essex, England

George F. WHEELERU18 MBermondsey, Surrey, England
Occ:Ordinary
My 100 and 1 questions:
Is Penelope a ship or a land navy establishment?
(there are a huge crew otherwise)
Did the Penelope travel to Australia in the late 1880's?
(I havn't found George Wheeler on the usual immigrants lists)
Given the starting point of the Penelope how do I source George Wheeler's
service record, etc?
How young did they inlist at that time?
I assume "Ordinary" is ordinary seaman
Was he discharged (is this the right term?) in Sydney??
I very much appreciate past guidance from the experts among us and hope
that someone will put me on the right track with the R Navy and the
PENELOPE.
Regards
Glynis
