Subject: [Mar] Research Resources in D.C. Area
Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 16:41:58 -0500

Can someone on this list tell me what research resources are available in the
Washington, D.C. metro region? I can include Baltimore, Richmond, and Hampton
Roads region in this. I'm familiar with the Maritime Museum in Hampton.

Some things I would like to find include ships logs, masters certificates, etc.

Some specific things include:
the transcripts from the Navy's inquest into the disappearance of the U.S.S.
Cyclops in 1918;
any records, ships logs, etc. for the American Hawaiian Steamship Line;
Muster Rolls, personnel records, etc. for ships in Admiral Dewey's fleet that
sailed into Manila Bay in May 1898.
These are all research areas concerning my grandfather, Capt. John Daniel
McLeod. I have copies of his military records from the national archives but
they don't say where he served. He collected a Spanish American War pension and
his obit mentions him being a Sergeant in the Marines in Dewey's fleet. He said
he was a passenger on the Cyclops on its ill fated voyage, but got left ashore
at an intermediate stop (probably Barbados).

My major interests are Nova Scotia and San Francisco Bay area maritime history.
I have a copy of the CD Ships and Seafarers of Atlantic Canada on which I found
my great grandfather, Capt. Charles Harrington McLeod. I have copies of books
by Wallace, Spicer, and Parker. I found a reference to Capt. Charlie in one of
Wallace's books and Parker mentions Capt. Charlie's father in Cape Breton Ships
and Men. Are there similar books and CDs concerning the San Francisco Bay area?
I also have a copy of Cape Breton Captain, published by Breton Books, Wreck
Cove, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, B0C 1H0, 1992, ISBN 1-895415-10-1. This book
was written by a younger half brother of Capt. Charlie, Capt. David Alexander
MacLeod, about Capt. David's time at sea in windjammers and is quite a yarn.

I probably have found most web sites that have anything useful on these subjects
and a lot that aren't useful. If you want to check what I've found start with
my web site:
