Cherryl Anderson <> asked on 1 Feb about the birth
at sea of James Alexander Montrose Anderson on the Montrose.
I replied then that I couldn't find the birth; however a second
search of the BoT Register films was successful - unfortunately a
barebones record which really only confirmed the family history.
I'm only updating the post since Cherryl's question has been forwarded
to the list again.
I might also add that besides the entry in the BoT Register which
should also have generated a an entry in the GRO Birth at Sea register,
the birth may have been registered elsewhere. A recent discussion on
soc.genealogy.australia+nz showed that it was customary to register
children born at sea in the Australian colonial records; one lady
whose ancestor was registered in Sydney was most surprised when I
found the birth in the BoT registers. There was also a suggestion that
births may have been registered at the first port of call, which on
the Australian run may have been Rio de Janeiro or Capetown :-)
I havn't found an example of this yet but havn't looked.

The birth at sea in 1830 of the father, Captain James Anderson is now
the challenge. There is no central registry for that date. Does anyone
know if his captain's or seaman's papers are likely to include a more
precise place of birth than 'At Sea' from the 1869 Captain's Register?
