Hi Jennifer
Debbie and Stephen have given you the most likely possibilities, but I
think there might be one other, and I'm hoping someone maybe able to dig
me out of a hole here :-))
But I seem to remember reading somewhere (and as usual I can't put my
finger on the article) that during the period of the Napoleonic Wars if
the father of an illegitimate child was not willing or was unable to
support the child, rather than take the punishment as meted out by the
justices ie usually gaol, he could volunteer to join the Royal Navy,
which was short of manpower, as usual!
If and when he eventually managed to escape the clutches of the Royal
Navy, I doubt that he would be able to return to his parish for many
years, and would probably need to settle down where he was able to find
work?
Just a thought, but regret I can't find the source for my argument.
As they sometimes say - the simplest of questions are sometimes the
best:-)
Regards
Paul
