Steve,
The STRATHALLAN was a passenger liner owned by P & O Line and taken over for
trooping on the outbreak of war. She sailed from Glasgow on 11th Dec.1942
for the Mediterranean carrying 4,408 troops, 248 nurses and a crew of 431.
On 21st Dec. when 40 miles north of Oran, she was torpedoed by the U.562
which started a fire in the engine room. This fire spread to a hold
containing ammunition and the ship was immediately abandoned due to the risk
of further explosions. All but 11 people, 6 of whom were crew members, were
picked up by other ships. The STRATHALLAN was taken in tow by a salvage tug,
but sank the following morning at position 30.01N 00.30W and only 12 miles
from port. [Wartime Disasters at Sea by D.Williams]
regards
Ted
