Dear Listers

I find your list pages fascinating, - so many detailed answers to obscure questions. I wonder if you are able to explain to me what a " Running Fitter" would have done in 1877.

My Great grandfather Rowell, has given this as his job on his daughter's Wedding Certificate. He lived in Roker Avenue, Sunderland, so, rightly or wrongly, I have assumed that it is something to do with Ship Building or the Docks there.
