As it is desirable to have the propeller working as deeply as possible I
can't imagine a ship being jumboized by increasing the depth below the
original keel, quite apart from the difficulty of doing so. Additional
draught would be gained by increasing the depth of the hull. In the case of
the "Torrey Canyon" the before and after stats were length 234.7 beam 31.7
depth 18.29 and draught 13.75 metres compared to 297 x 38.1 x 20.88 x 15.57.
The increased depth of 2.59 metres would have been the height of the poop
and of that 1.82 metres became additional draught. Where the old and new
structures are faired together it is done over a considerable length and
only in aerial views it it possible to readily see the join.
