Hi Everyone,
Have just joined this list and hoping someone can help me. My gt grandfather was with the Merchant Navy in the 1850s-60s. The only information I have is that he arrived in Sydney on 13th August, 1866 on the 'Octavia' as an able-bodied seaman. It seems he then left the Navy and settled in Australia. What I am hoping to do is to find some information about his career in the Navy. He was born in 1841 at Salford, Lancashire. Can anyone suggest at what age he may have joined the MN and where. Also, where can I obtain more information about his career?
