Hello Ernie
Welcome aboard ;-) Straying from your usual haunts?
Unless you are interested in your relative's pay records regret the
list and number will be of little or no interest. They provide
information as to where to find the man's pay account - ie ISTR List 5
represents the fact that he would have been ship's company onboard HMS
KING ALFRED (as opposed to supernumerary (17) or one of about 18 other
different categories) and 115 would be his Ship's Book Number ie the
number he shouted out at the pay table when his name was called.
These were allocated consecutively - usually starting at 1 for each
commission.
So sorry to disappoint. But that said the pay ledger would tell you
how much he was paid, badge money and long service pay and other
allowances - when he went on leave and was paid ration allowance - if
he was charged for lost stores - if the vessel was serving overseas
and was qualified for overseas allowances, if he was a naughty boy and
was charged mulcts of pay for absence without leave and other
punishments affecting pay - and lots of other bits and pieces - in
other words, once you get the hang of how the ledgers are laid out and
the various coding used (vital) one can deduce quite a bit about
someone - most pay accounts are quite boring though - its often only
the rascals that are of any interest ;-))
Regards
Paul
