A Master Mariner is not necessarily Captain of a vessel. He has qualified to
be so. I qualified as Master Mariner in1968, but didn't get my first command
until 1977 - quite common then, but nowadays many get command as soon as
they qualify - losing out on experience!

Mariner can be used to describe anyone who earns his living at sea.
