Hi list,
i have hit a brick wall and am in desperate need of help!
My gt-grandfather's occupation on his marriage certificate is mariner. He
lived in Strood on the Medway River, which was connected by canal to
London. My mother understood that he sailed barges.
My problem is that i have found him on the 1891 census with his wife and two
small children. He was born in 1857 and between his birth and the 1891
census i can find absolutely no details of him.
I have started checking the braveheart site with the lists of ships in port
on the night of the 1881 census, but so far have only checked three
counties.
I heard from the list that the 1881 census discs had a separate list for
mariners and their vessels, but at the LDS they had no idea what i was
talking about.
There were not many Dohertys in this area during this time frame and I have
found many other Dohertys that may be connected, but until I know Henry
Daniel Doherty's date of birth I cannot request a birth certificate to see
who his mother is. His father was recorded as John Doherty on his marriage
certificate.
Any help would be appreciated as I have been searching for this guy for
nearly a year.
