Would members of the Navy have carried copies of their records c 1860+?

We now have 2 copies of the records which appear to carry the same information but are not identical.

The first was sent out from England years ago by an uncle and the second are from ADM files at the PRO.

Luckily we can read the ships names clearly on this second set. Is there a website which would have details of ships of the navy c 1837 - 1884 as between them father and son were aboard a lot of ships or perhaps a book which might be in one of our major libraries.
