Subject: Re: [Mar] WARSPITE TRAINING SHIP
Date: Sat, 2 Mar 2002 03:59:22 EST
There were two ships loaned the Marine Society, and named WARSPITE that were
used as boys training ships in the River Thames between 1862 and 1918; both
came to a sticky end ...
WARSPITE (i) was an old sailing ship of the line; built in 1807 as a 74 gun
3rd rate, she was rebuilt in 1840 as a 50 guns ship; loaned to the Marine
Society in March 1862. It was destroyed by fire whilst lying at Woolwich on 3
January 1876.
WARSPITE (ii) was the former 1st rate ship of the line 'Waterloo' built in
1833. Converted to steam power in 1859 and renamed 'Conqueror' in 1862. In
August 1876 she was given to the Marine Society to replace the lost Warspite,
and renamed by them WARSPITE. She survived until 20 January 1918 ... when she
was destroyed by fire.
