Hi Lesley and Jim

Its a little hard to comment on why there should be discrepancies
between 2 sets of documents without knowing the exact origins of both,
and what the differences are, and even then it may be difficult, if
not impossible, to give a satisfactory explanation. So not a lot of
help ;-)

Depending on what sort of information you are looking for I would
think that you probably need a selection of books:

'Ships of the Royal Navy' compiled by JJ Colledge and published in
1969 by David and Charles, in 2 volumes and supplement.

'The Sailing Navy List' by David Lyon, published by Conway Maritime
Press. This covers the period 1688-1860.

Volumes 6 and 7 of : The Royal Navy: A History from 1816 to the Death
of Queen Victoria by Sir William Laird Clowes with the assistance of
others - Vol. VII. First published in 1903: Published again in 1997 by
Chatham Publishing ISBN 1 86176 016 7. Vol 6 ISBN 1 86176 015 9.
These may tell you when and where the vessels concerned were involved
in anything "interesting", and if the vessels were new or innovative
for the time when Clowes usually provides details of the vessels
concerned.

I'm sure others can provide alternative and may be better sources for
your research.

Alternatively, over a number of weeks make occasional postings on the
list, with details of the vessels concerned and dates served, and I'm
sure some of the other subscribers, even if they can't help, would be
most interested ;-)
