Dear All:

I'm trying to identify the history of my GGF.
Tillinghast Tripp of New Bedford Mass.

Herman Tripp has done a lot of work and his
web site has this for a reference:
"On September 26 1812, Daniel Gifford sold to "Tillinghast Tripp,
Westport, mariner, salt marsh meadow near Horseneck Beach,
Westport" and on December 24, 1829, "Isaac Cory
assignes to Tillinghast Tripp, Westport, mariner, land in
Westport." Tillinghast was a master ship builder in the early days
of the whaling industry. His obituary in New Bedford Mercury of
July 25, 1836 calls him Captain, a title
given to ship bilders as well as ship masters
(American Families 6-7). "

So my questions are:
A: what is a "mariner".
B: How could someone be a " mariner" and a
Master Ship Builder
C: Where can I find a list of Ship Builders in
New Bedford Mass? I've looked at the web site
and searched at the Museum.
D: Why would someone want Salt Marsh Meadows?
E: What is the "American Families"

Any help or references would be highly appreciated.

Best Regards
John A Hansen
