Hello,

Firstly can I thank Ted Finch for all of the help he has given me regarding the ships my great grandfather was on. Also, thank you to everyone else who has e-mailed me and made me feel welcome on this list.

I am trying to search for my great grandfather's first marriage, which I know nothing about other than the fact he was a widower byt the time he married my gt grandmother.

He was an engineer and passed his second engineers exams on the 14-10-1902 when he gave his address as 3, York Street, West Hartlepool- he was not there for the census in 1901. I have the original certificate but I'm under the impression there is a way to get more information regarding the info he gave when he applied for this certificate... can I find out what he was doing 4 years prior to this certification and if so how?

I also know his "first" ship was the "Clumberhall" which set sail from Newport, Mon on the 8-5-1901 to India and discharged my gt granddad on the 27-10-1901 at Newport, Mon. Is there a way I can find out more info on his previous ship or job and current address etc from this piece of information?

It seems that most of the ships he worked on from 1901-1923 were owned by different West Hartlepool companies. How can I find out more info regarding a possible residence whilst working for these different shipping companies?

I also have my gt grandad's certificate where he finished his apprenticeship as an engine fitter. It is dated 9-8-1893 but he finished the apprenticeship on the 20-8-1890. I believe he was still in Northern Ireland- Belfast at this time (this is where he was born in 1870). My question is, is there a way I can find out more info regardig this apprenticeship and his indenture?

I think that's currently all of the questions I have. Thank you very much to everyone and good luck with your own research,

Alethea
