Well, I have had no luck in my search on Joseph Rae, so here is another
question, please .
JAMES PATTEN was born around1850. His occupation on the wedding certi. of
his daughter was given as "ships fireman". Now this was Joseph's occupation
but he was a generation younger.
Were there steamships already needing firemen/stokers from the ,say, 1870s
on? OR would that be a different kind of fireman?
IS there any way at all of finding out a merchant mariner's number, please?
THank you
Iris
