Subject: Mystery flag and ship
Hello,
I've just acquired an oil painting unsigned but attributed to Joseph Heard
1799-1859 of a three masted packet sailing ship on a large canvas in a
storm. It is called Canadian Ship in Arctic Waters. Has the red ensign on
the gaff and flies three flags from the mizzen starting at top a swallow
tail pennant (mystery flag) with a blue field in the middle with white
fields fore and aft.
Underneath are the white and red (#5 of Watson's) and the blue cross on a
yellow field (#3 Watsons').
So it looks like the ship dates between 1827-39, the period of Watson's
Holyhead to Liverpool Numeric Flags System. And it looks like its ship
number is _____ + 5 + 3. The number 5 flag I believe does not appear on
ships before or after that period.
Can't find the mystery flag on your site or any other. Can you shed any
light for me?
Thanks, Sam
