Subject: [Mar] Launch of Toronto, Denny built, 1849
Date: Sun, 4 May 2003 09:21:27 -0400 (EDT)
Some members of the list are interested in Denny built ships so
might like this clipping.
However it raises a question. Thomas Appleton's book, Ravenscrag,
does not mention the Toronto. His list of sailing ships ends with the
Thistle of 1836 which makes me wonder if the end of the list was omitted!
The Allans owned sailing ships named Ottawa and Montreal, the latter
of 506 tons being built at Dumbarton in 1848.
The date of the launch wasn't given but this appears to be the Toronto
which left Glasgow on June 23 and arrived at Quebec on August 10 (a very
long passage), which suggests the launch was in May, 1849.

Montreal Gazette, June 23, 1849
LAUNCH - On Saturday afternoon, at three o'clock, a splendid new ship named
the Toronto, of 513 tons register, was launched from the building-yard of
Messrs. Denny and Rankin, Dunbarton. For workmanship and finish, this
vessel fully supports the glorious high character of her builders, while
her model reflects great credit on the taste of Mr. James Rankin, by whom
she was designed, and leaves no doubt that her owners, the Messrs. Allan,
of this city, have added another "clipper" to their numerous fleet, so
favorably known in the Canada trade. The Toronto was at the Broomielaw
in little more than two hours after the launch took place, and is now
loading for Montreal, for which port, we observe from an advertisement
in another column, she sails on the 15th proximo.
