Hi Joe,
Here are three of them. If you can discover the owners of the others, I may
be able to provide more details -
UMBERTO I
2,746 g.t, clipper bows, launched 15th May 1878 for Rocco Piaggio and sailed
Italy to South America. Jul.1885 Piaggio fleet was taken over by Navigazione
Generale Italiana, Genoa. Remained on South America service until 1894 when
she transferred to NGI's Egyptian Line service and given a white hull.
Dec.1908 used as an accommodation ship for homeless after the Messina
Earthquake. Jul.1910 transferred to Societa Nationale del Servizi Marittimi,
reduced to cargo only. 1911 sold to Commandante G. Orlando, Livorno. 14th
Aug.1917 torpedoed and sunk by UC 35 off Gallinara Island.
TARAWERA
2,003 g.t., owned by Union SS Co of New Zealand and was used for the annual
cruise to the West Coast Sounds. Jul.1921 laid up at Port Chalmers. 1927
sold to W. Borlase, Dunedin for scrapping but resold to Rosshavet Whaling
Co, Sandefjord. Towed to Paterson's Inlet, Stewart Island by tug SOUTHLAND
where she was employed as a storeship for the Norwegian whaling fleet. On
21st Aug.1933 she was towed to Lowry's Beach, Stewart Island and grounded to
form a breakwater for small boats.
TE ANAU
1,652 g.t., owned by Union SS Co of New Zealand and was used in most of
their services for 42 years. Mar.1921 laid up at Port Chalmers. Jun.1924
sold to Todd & Borlase, Dunedin and dismantled at Port Chalmers. Aug.1924
hull towed to Wanganui by KAITOKE and placed as breakwater. Her remains are
still visible in the Wanganui River port area.
Info from Union Fleet by Ian Farquhar and Merchant Fleets, vol.40 by Duncan
Haws.
regards
Ted
