Hello Mariner's List,
A big thank you to all who replied on & off-list to my query about my gt
gt gt uncle Capt. Richard Dyer about 3 weeks ago - great information!
This time I'm looking for anything at all on my gt gt grandfather,
William Henry BRAY (Capt. Dyer's brother-in-law). Here's what I know
(or think I know) about him so far:
Born 1809 in Devonshire or Cornwall.
Served in RN Coast Guard, stationed at Brandon, Kerry, Ireland in 1836;
St. John's Point, Donegal, Ireland, in 1851 & 1853 (according to what I
know of the birthplaces of 3 of his 11 children).; Greencastle, Donegal
Ireland last several years of his life. He & family lived at the Coast
Guard Station at Greencastle, now a maritime museum - see
http://homepage.tinet.ie/~greencastlemaritime/Museum.html (they don't
have any information on him - I checked there first).
Died at Greencastle, July 6, 1864, supposedly of old wounds suffered
years earlier in the Crimean War, although I have no facts to support
this family myth.
I have a photo of him & his wife taken circa 1860, and have been told by
one person so far that the braid loop on his sleeve appears probably to
be that of a Warrant Officer, or possibly a Sub Lieutenant. If anyone
wants to take a look and hazard an opinion, I'll be happy to e-mail a
JPG of the photo to you privately.
Any information that anyone can provide on William Henry Bray would be
greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
David Berry
