Subject: Where was the Captain buried?
Date: Wed, 7 Apr 2004 09:15:58 +0300
I have received a newspaper article of 1880, about a Captain Thomas Dodd
FENWICK who died of fever, actually in Lagos, Nigeria after visiting the
doctor there. The chief officer took command, died 10 days later and was
buried at sea. No mention was made of the Captain being buried at sea, so I
am assuming he was buried in Lagos.
There is a memorial stone in the family plot in Co.Durham UK but I cannot
think he is actually buried there. (1880!)
I have googled till I'm blue in the face but am unable to find any
graveyards or missions of that era in Lagos.
Anyone had a similar problem and knows where to look for mariners dying in
foreign ports?
