Hi Ann,

The PRO do have a name index with in which to locate the service number
and then in turn the actual records. I did this for my grandfather a
couple of weeks ago and was surprised at how easily I located them.

It does depend on which years he was in the service, anything upto WW2 I
think is available, but WW2 records are still held by the Royal Navy, so
whilst I obtained details of his service from 1919 to 1931, he rejoined
the service at the outbreak of WW2 and these records I have had to write
to the Royal Navy personnel for these (they charge £25 for the search).

There are some good information leaflets on the PRO site which explain
things pretty well, here is one that was useful to me
http://catalogue.pro.gov.uk/Leaflets/ri2031.htm but keying in Royal Navy
into the search engine on the site will give you more depending on
whether you are looking for records of ratings or officers.

Good luck
Kevin.

I wonder if anyone could tell me the possibility of finding a persons
service record for the Royal Navy at PRO without actually having a
service
number. Is this at all possible or would I have an impossible search and
be wasting my
time.
Thankyou
Ann Dale
