Hi:

Having been extremely pleased to receive so much help re my previous enquiry, I thought I'd ask a few more "novice" questions!

Thomas MELDRUM born 1856 in Hartlepool, Co. Durham, England (nephew to my Robert Meldrum previously mentioned) states he is in the Merchant Navy when he married in Cardiff, Wales in 1883. He has three children all born in Hartlepool in 1884, 1887 and 1890, and on each birth certificate he's shown as a marine engineer. When his wife dies in 1896 he's shown as a civil engineer.

Could he be a marine engineer in the merchant navy? Should I assume that as a civil engineer he's now out of the merchant navy?

Am I right in thinking the difference between the regular navy and the merchant navy is that the merchant navy carries supplies, and they would not be involved in armed conflict? Or is that incorrect?

Where can I start to find information on his career in the merchant navy?

Thank you.
