A friend has asked where he might obtain further information on a seaman and
the circumstances of his demise. I would not wish to misdirect him, and
thought it best to post the details to the list in the hope that someone can
give informed guidance. Do any Inquest records survive - or press reports -
that would give the name of a vessel - and should it be so where does he go
from there? The date of death suggests an over indulgence in Christmas
spirit but who knows!
Samuel Bocking, a seaman, aged 64, died from the "effects of falling out of
a boat" into the River Thames - this was on 24th Dec 1841. The death was
registered in the St. Olave registration district on 6 Jan 1842, the
informant being the Coroner of Southwark.
