Hi Carole
You say:
>I am beginning to look at muster books covering his ships and have discovered on an 1839 list four ships names listed which do not appear on his certificate of service
What is the source of the list ? If it's something in the muster book
you are referring to I would surmise that he may have been lent or
loaned to the vessels listed for the periods in question - the answer
might be in either the muster or pay lists for the vessels listed - as
well as checking the ship's company lists make sure you also check for
supernumeraries ie officers and men borne in addition to complement,
as well as the ship's company - I'm not sure when they started
creating separate lists or different parts of these books for
personnel in this category?
If he was the Cook/steward that we've discussed previously he could
well be following a particular officer or his retinue around ?
Commodores and Flag Officers and their staffs, although they may be
attached to one vessel for administration purposes, often spend
periods on other vessels on the station eg when I was out the Far East
the Flag Officer 2nd in Command of the Far East Station and his staff
would join the ship for periods when we were exercising with other
ships or whatever ; eventually he would probably return whence he
came, or those being the days when we had a bit of a navy, he and his
staff would probably transfer to another ship for a further period.
Keeps the fleet on its toes ! ;-)
There may, of course, be another answer, but one doesn't readily
sprint to mind, unless he was surplus to requirement and was simply
being loaned to the other vessels as vacancies arose ?
Regards
Paul

The ships I cannot account for are
>HMS Poictiers
>HMS Shannon
>HMS Salvadore
>HMS Spencer
>but on the certificate of service all the dates seem to follow on consecutively leaving no time to have been on these extra vessels and not explaining the absence in the muster list of Asia/Tonnant & Forth?? is it just a mistake with the ship names or some other mystery!
