Subject: Captain Archibald DICKSON of the 'Stanbrook' 1939
Date: Thu, 2 Dec 2004 20:17:55 -0000

An enquirer to the Glamorgan Rootsweb list is seeking details of Archibald DICKSON, born Cardiff 1892 we think, who was master of the SS Stanbrook on 28th March 1939 when the vessel transported 2600 refugees from Alicante, Spain to Oran, Algeria shortly before the end of the Spanish Civil War.

It appears from the Commonwealth War Graves site that he was lost when the Stanbrook sank 18th November 1939 off the Tyne , torpedoed by U57.

Is anyone able to give more details of the ship or Archibald DICKSON and his career.

A book in Spanish, based on oral history, Rafael TORRES «Los náufragos del Stanbrook». gives the captain's name as Andrew DICKSON, and this is repeated on some web sites such as http://www.gara.net/idatzia/20041108/art87174.php
