Subject: Prisoner-of-War, London 1809 - handgun regulations?

Hi Listers,

On the JJ trail again - Jorgen Jorgenson, "King of Iceland". This time,
my Danish e-pal has tracked down a pair of pistols, owned by descendants
of his younger brother Marcus Jörgensen, but said to belong to JJ.

My question - is it at all plausible that a man who was Captain of an
enemy ship ("Admiral Juul"), and was allowed out on parole (after a
period of incarceration, on the hulk "Justitia"), and then illegally
sailed off to Iceland ... which he usurped ... could have emerged from
all that with his very own duelling pistols, still intact?

My question is, really - were there strict regulations, at that time,
about the firearms of POWs? If it's out of the question that they could
have been the pistols he took with him ... well, I'd like to know that
at the outset.

BTW, I have photos of the pistols, and all I can say is, they certainly
look historic to me ;-)) Happy to forward a copy offline, if anyone has
expertise in that area. My own knowledge stops short at watching my
cousins shoot rabbits, around 45 years ago ... not exactly useful ;-))

Cheers,

Lesley
