Wolf was a destroyer built Birkenhead 1897
385 tons armed 5 x 6 pdr
The reason the entry is given as 'Leander (Wolf)' is because the Leander (a
cruiser) would have been acting as the 'parent' ship for the flotilla; she was
based at Devonport.
Iron Duke - battleship built at Portsmouth, launched 12 Oct. 1912
25,000 tons armed 10 x 13.5in guns
She was the flagship of the Grand Fleet under Admiral Sir John Jellicoe
based at Scapa Flow. Your g-grandfather seems to have left her just before she
led the GF into action at Jutland ..... otherwise it saw no action
Sandhurst - Repair ship, ex merchant ship Manipur purchased and converted in
1915
11500 tons armed 4 x 4in
She was moored in Scapa Flow, equipped with machine and repair shops to
maintain destroyers; plus storage space for torpedoes and supplies
Tamarisk - sloop, built at Renfrew 1916
1250 tons armed 2 x 4in
As above, Gibraltar was the depot ship for smaller ships ; based at Scapa
Flow
When first built The Tamarisk served as a 'Q' ship, but in 1918-19 she was
part of the 3rd Sloop Flotilla, (Scapa) and would have been used as a convoy
escort in the North Sea.
