I suspect that hereby may hang the problem ! If his service documents
were lost when the Cleopatra was torpedoed, then there will be nothing
prior to this period, except what was reconstructed afterwards. I've
heard of stories where the civil service were simply unable to
reconstruct records - apart from WWI Army records, I understand that
old 20th century naval pay records may also have been lost to enemy
action during the war. Without those, and with out a service
certificate, one can only take the man's word, plus the odd record
here and there which might support what he says. But I would have
thought there should be something subsequent to the Cleopatra !

I hope I'm wrong, but this would not be the first time I've heard this
sort of story.
