Hi all,

Another one of my questions for the list please.

If a sailor was a Commander in the RN in 1802 and a Captain of a RN ship when he died in 1808, roughly how old would he have had to have been please.

I am still trying to find my Joseph Ore Masefield, but can't. I have come across a possibility for his birth, and while I can't confirm it is him, is it within the realms of possibility as age goes.

He was Christened in 1758 which would have made him 45 in 1802 and 50 when he died. Was this 'a good age' for a RN officer to be a Captain.

There was another one born 1722 but I think this would have been far too early.

Is my thinking on the right track please? Thanks.

Sue
