Good evening, John

Thank you once again, I am overwhelmed by the kindness of people on
these mailing lists. I have helped others myself but it's very good when
you're stuck to have some assistance.

I've been reading more about Captain Crighton in the New York Times.
There seems to have been a huge collection (over $17,000) and Captain
Crighton received $1,600 of this as a reward. He seems to have had to listen to
a fulsome appreciation by the Mayor of Philadelphia in order to do so, but
I should think that money would have been enough to live on for a while.

This reminded me that my uncle, John Davison, sank a German U-boat
from the merchant ship the Newton Pine in WW11, and received a share of the
value of the cargo. The captain was , apparently, rather the worse for
drink at the time.

I wonder why Robert would take an exam he didn't need to, having
not only been a Captain but having demonstrated his skill to the whole of
America? Maybe it was just easier to get another commission.

Thank you again for your help
