Hi Tim,
You will need to order yourself a copy of "Fast and Loose" by Nigel
Tranter. It is #6RCEF at Scholar's Bookshelf (1-609-395-6933) Catalog #33H3.
I'll try not to ruin the story for you , but it starts with Colin Og MacColl
at Dumbarton with his step-brother, a priest. They board a Campbell boat full
of explosives in route to Oban and pirate the boat to ArdColl?? In the end he
wins the hand of Marsala Macleod with the help of Angus MacDougall, Grahams,
Lamonts and another Maccoll Family. There is a brief mention of McCall's and
MacDonalds, neither involved in story. Don't know if there is any truth in
story, but it moves fast and probably loose.
Very little is really known about the Battle of Bannockburn, but most
accounts agree that Robert formed four schiltrons with his men with one held
in reserve The Earl of Moray appears to have been in command of the main line
with Sir James Douglas commanding " Stewart's Batallion" and Edward Bruce,
Earl of Carrick leading Third Group. Robert Keith, Marshall of Scotland had
the calvary that took out the English archers. Robert lead the fourth group
into battle. After all were committed Angus Og MacDonald led his Highlanders
and the Templars down the hill in surprise. Would McCalls/MacColls have been
in Stewart's Battalion or Angus Og's Highlander's? Both Stewart and Douglas
received knighthood just prior to battle. Nothing more is said about Sir
Stewart in my book.
Any luck with the Coat of Arms of Winston MacColl/ McCall. In McCalls
rootsweb this week there was also a Hugh MacColl that arrived in Charleston,
SC in late 1700's and later moved to Alabama. Do you know more of his family?
Be Proud of Your Heritage,
Ron McCall
