Message Board Post:

I know a Bernard McDonald, and wife Dorothea were on the east side of Manhattan around 1873, as they baptised a son John Joseph McDonald (possibly my gr.grandfather)in Saint Brigid's RC Church on Jun 21, 1873. Baptismal sponsors: Terence McArdley and Annie McKancy. ------------------------

Futher census checking found a Bernard & Dora in Brooklyn.
----------------------------------------------------------
In the 1880 NY Census, Bernard (McDonnell)a ship smith is listed with his wife Dora and the following children: John, Mary, Dora, & Charles, (Ref: FHLF 1254897, NA T9-0897, page 153D).
----------------------------------------------------------
The only lead I have on my great grandfather is that my dad believed he was named after him, (John Joseph McDonald). My dad's father was John F, McDonald, b 1897 in NY (per the birth records of his children). He married Mary Scriven/Scrivens in Jersey City, NJ prior to 1919.
------------------------------------------------------------
The baptismal records from the Church of Saint Peter, 16 Barclay St. NY, are for the children of my gr grandfather John McDonald & wife Mary McKeever, "my grandfather's siblings": James b 4/1894 NY, then John b 11/1897 NY, Mary b 2/1900 NY, & Agnes b 1902 NY. The spelling of their last name contained the typical spelling variations of McDonald, ie, McDonel, McDonnell, & Donald.

------------------------------------------------------------
I located my great grandfather, John McDonald & wife Mary McKeever and their family at 36 Washington St. NYC in the 1900 NY census. John stated on the census that he was born Mar, 1873, in NY. I did find my great grandfather John and wife Mary McKeever' marriage record at Saint Stephen's RC Church, June 18, 1893. The telephone number for this church was 212-683-1675.

------------------------------------------------------------
Some time between 1902 and 1907 my great granfather John McDonald vanished and we find his wife Mary McKeever had re-married to a Robert Frey, and gave birth to a son in Dec.1908 while residing at Vessey Street, NY. Subsequently they moved to Hoboken, NJ, then Jersey City, NJ, circa 1912-1950. -----------------------------------------------------

I believe I tracked another John J, McDonald's death
certificat # 12866, he died 7/1/1912, resided at 236 Johnson Ave. Brooklyn at the time of his death. His DOB was 12/1/1872, his dad was Mathew, b in Ireland, his mother was Margaret Seale, b Ire. In 1912, a John J McDonald was burried in Calvery, Sect 6B, Range 7, Plot A, Grave #5. This grave was purchased by a Mathew McDonald on Jan 6th, 1899, and had about 14 burials.

I'm not sure if Bernard and Mathew McDonald are relatives or if both had a son John J McDonald? I say this because I have not researched Mathew McDonald and his family, nor have I paid for the research on the grave he purchased in 1899.

These are all the leads I have at the moment. Let me know if
you find a connection.-----------

Sincerely,
Mrs. Kotter
