Boy, that makes me real happy that I did a lot of my growing up on an
extremely isolated near-desert CO ranch! We locked one closet door, but the
rest of the house was left open for neighbors who might have to take shelter.

We ourselves had to take emergency shelter close to the highway in a bad
blizzard. The Widow Smart wasn't home and Dad broke her door down.
Christmas Day and her house was just 1/4 mile from our stuck car and no such
well-located house elsewhere on that long stretch of highway. We walked into
the blizzard to get there and ice formed inside my skirt. My stepmother was
lagging behind me and I got behind her. The new hired hand and my baby
brother got pneumonia. It took me three days to get warm and I was a
teenager. Dad made things right with the Widow Smart.
