You want first names? My Grannie took the cake on naming children, needless
to say, many of them changed their names legally.
Arbutus Butaun Hughes She changed to Helen, but was called Pat
Hiram Huey Hughes He was called Huey, but changed it to Hugh
Lydia Golden Hughes She was called Golden Hues but changed it to Golden H.
Thank God that grandpa got there to name her first because grandma was going
to name her Arbutus Elzina, her younger sister got stuck with Arbutus.
Of course this makes it all very hard to find family roots.
Grandpa was Hiram Hughes, He married Martha. When searching for family
tombstones in southern Indiana, we found Martha Hughes wife of Hiram.
Knowing that this could not be grandma because we were all at grandma's
funeral and burial, and that was not in southern Indiana, we wondered who it
could be. As we got into the family lines, we found out that grandpa's
father was Hiram Hughes and his mother was Martha, also.
Couldn't find any of grandpa's records, till we discovered that he used his
nickname of Rhent, ditto on Grannie, she came in with Mattie.
My husband's grandfather was Marvin, but his tombstone has his nickname Boss
on it. His brother was Travis, but again the tombstone says Jack.
There are a million Mary's in every line, can anyone tell me why the nickname
for Mary is Polly, and they were never consistent with which they used? How
about Sally for Sarah? These names are not used for these names any more,
but Bill is William,Yvonne is Bonnie, Jack is still for John, Bobby for
Robert. Ever wonder how this started and why some are no longer used, yet
some are? And how did they come up with these just like then, that have
nothing to do with the real given name? I mean I can see Judy for Judith,
and Benny for Benjamin, but why does Richard become Dick?
Also, remember when we were all called by 2 names? I was Judy Sue, there was
Barbara Ann, Linda Sue, Patty Ann,Betty Lou, Sandra Kay, Willie Lee, Sam
Henry, Billy Joe, Tami Jayne,Shelley Rae,Kimmi Sue, Beth Ann. For some,it
was kept all of your life, some stopped using both names as soon as they
could. The last 4 names are my kids, and even though they don't like it,
they still get called that by me sometimes. Guess I just have senior moments
now and then.
Mary,John,William,Sarah,Martha, and Robert. I sometimes wish our ancestors
could have been more original. Has to be 10 of each name in every family.
Of course we have like 4 Obedient ,Obediant ,Bedents(and I mean 4 of each) in
one branch of our family. I figure that the first one was unique and the
rest followed suit, they lost all form of originality.
Sometimes the good ancestors left us a clue about them. Like a girl named
Indiana or Arizona. I wonder if they gave insights to their personalities,
or just high hopes for their children. Such as Hope, Faith
Charity,Bless,Patience, Pleasant.,Noble,Reason,Creed,Thankfull,Hopefull and
Gracious. The one that named Sorrow and Thankless must have had a real bad
day!
Funny things, those names.
