I14980 Solomon Wolford M 1840 25-Jun-1893 Solomn, born in Danville,
Illinois, moved to Tipton County, Indiana. He mustered into Indiana infantry
13 Dec 1861 with Company K, 47th Infantry unit with his brother Valentine.
........
In the battle of Port Gibson, Mississippi, the first of May 1863, 130 of the
47th was killed in action, 318 wounded. 5) During the vital battle of
Champion Hill, 16 May 1863, LT Perry of the 47th, with his company in the
hottest part of battle, was advised to moved to shelter. Perry said, "No,
sir, the 47th never gives back an inch." Immediately after, Perry was shot
in the heart. Two men were seen weeping over him, in spite of the fierce
battle. ...............
Solomon contract "black water fever" while cutting longs and working on the
Yazoo River campaign. He never really recovered from this exposure. Unit
muster rolls said he spent several months in and out of field hospitals.
Solomon was also in the large battle of Champion Hill, where his brother
Valentine was killed, and the seige of Vicksburg under General Grant. After
his initial enlistment, he was reenlisted in Louisiana (18 Mar 1863), and
because of further medical problems, he was discharged 19 Mar 1865. A
court record, Oct 17, 1867, in the Tipton County Court mentioned a case
against Solomon by Matilda J. Dutchins for "suitable provisions has been made
for the bastard child" and the case was dismissed. It's not stated whether
the child was a girl or boy or what happened to Matilda. Anyone can
imagine Martin talking to Solomon, telling him it was time to settle down and
not be roaming in the hay barn............
(dan note: there is no listing for this infant in the gedcom, but there
should be!:( If it was given away? .......mmmmmmmmm? Good lead! Oh, and them
"infants" that I posted; dont' believe paperwork! Just because it may
indicate a death, or no death, but might be assumed; that may not be the
truth:) I was reported dead many times, but here I am.....still:)
(dan note: no surnames in this gedcom; COTTRILL:(
