Hi Sheila,
I can relate to that being called to task business...some of my family are
so angry with me for looking into our heritage that they no longer speak to
me. They do not want to know anything of what I've learned.....
I think people get stuck on terems, sometimes. Sometimes, maybe they think
they're being called liars because they've told everyone all their lives
they are "German" or "French," only to have someone like us come along and
figure out that English dude's heritage actually went back to Spain before
he came here...he only had that nice English name because his Spanish mom
married an Englishman...
I also remember my "white" cousins picking on my sister and I for not having
a white father...they were so white, they blended with the walls, to hear
them talk. Yet, I realize now their nice whiteness was blemished by the fact
our shared "German" grandfather wasn't just a European, but also of Asian,
possibly Mongolian heritage. Family left behind did NOT pass Hitler's acid
test for being Aryian enough....unfortunately. They, like millions of others
of Jewish, Gypsy and other ethnics, died and are buried in unknown graves.
The town of my ancestry no longer exists. Family who survived did so because
they made it to Switzerland or to this country. Those who didn't get out
made it out only thru death.
You know, your surname registry reads like my old classmates at school -- my
neighbors were Boling -- Conley was a state rep and former teacher --
Goodwin was the orthodontist, Hein raised the prize milk cows, Maxwell was
among the town founders, Sparks was a town cop, Skaggs cleaned up the
hallways in school, Brown was a farmer and Beavers was my dad's more than
half brother's wife's maiden name....
Interestingly enough, my town was a drawing card for many Appalachian folk
because of the mills. The mills allowed us kids to get a better education --
which is what our parents wanted for us, but sometimes, we sounded more
southern than the South! LOL!
