I think I finally understand your theory as to "What Is A Melungeon".
From what you have stated, Melungeons were just a group of people that
other locals categorized into a certain group in the Newman's Ridge
area. Probably because of their social similarities. Nothing more than
a term for reference. As outcasts of the other locals. Having nothing
to do with physical features or genetics. Because your other uncles are
excluded by you.
### Hi Roger: What I said is in complete agreement with the 1950 survey of
all the clans in the eastern united state, will you agree this is not
historically correct. anyone who traveled in the Fort blackmore area in say
1970-80 looking for Melungeons most would say they never heard the word,
but anyone on the street could tell you about the Ramps, I know this to be
a fact becasue I did this. They would tell you where they lived, there was
a community between fort Blackmore and Dungannon called Ramp town. Which is
exactly what Price found. All of these were mixed and listed FC on census
records, Price wrote they must be known in then area where they lived by
the locasls as such a name. They are mapped and discribed by Dr Edward T.
Price, I did not mean to imply the Ramps, Genies, etc. all those may have
had the same genetic makeup but they were know and called by those names in
the area where they were located, they have all now become Melungeons.
It's had to express in an email whAT you are trying to explain and if I
have understood you email correctly then that was not exactly right becauen
I did not meaan to imply bthey were not genetically relate. The Cherokee
may be genetically related to another Indian tribe but they are know as
Cherokee. Maybe the message I get from the internet melungeon sites is the
Melungeons has replaced most of the other clans.. Jack
In that light, I understand how you could feel that if
a person was not descended from this group, then they couldn't be
"Melungeon". If that is the case, then there is nothing unique about a
Melungeon. It's just the name of a bunch of people who are the
inhabitants of a certain area. And because we are friends, of course
you know I say this with respect. I suppose this is why I am so
confused over the discussions on this list. God help the new comers.
Some of us are saying that a Melungeon is a certain genetic make up,
others are saying that Melungeons are a way of life, and others are
saying that Melungeons are just a group of people in a particular area
with a descriptive label. While others are trying to figure how the
name came about. It makes the theory of which came first the Chicken or
the Egg simple, huh? Now don't look at me and say duhhh! I'm just a
little thick skulled at times. It only took me about 3 years to see
where everyone was going in this research.

## Hi Roger;
According to the oldest records the Melungeons where given this
name by their white neighbors and also according to the written records
they were free persons of color. Also, the oldest written record of the
word Melungeon was 1813, this date is withing the time frame 1795-1812
that these people who were dubbed Melungeons settled in this area. If we
say that the sons of John Goins who were never were in the Applachian
area are also Melungeons, then their parents who bore them would be
Melungeon, then their parents, etc, etc, where are we going to stop at?
John Goins grandparents were born 1700. The second oldest written record
of the Melungeons was also in East Tennessee in the Jonesboro wig when
this Melungeon was decribed as Half black and half white. Taking all the
old records I have accumalated you can see why the was written thus.
So a short answer to the questions who were the Melungeons? And where
did they live ? was first defined in a dictionary in 1892. "One of a
very dark people living in the Mountains of Tennessee. By Dr. Isaac K.
Funk. New Standard dictionary of the English Language, p 1548. (The
Portuguese Making of America" by Manuel Mira, page 25).
There may yet be something uncovered to prove all of this wrong, someone
could find positive proof that the actual Melungeon were an old Indian
tribe know as Melungin for example, but until this happens I will define
them by the written historical records, which is exactly why Dr. Issac
Funk whote his discription in the old Dict. above. Jack
