John T.,
In my own opinion, I disagree with most of your issues. The Melungeons were "pinned" by Miss Dromgoole's narrow thoughts and views. She visited one small ridge of down trodden people and wrote that "they are filthy, and have filthy homes; they are rogues; close, suspicious, inhospitable, untruthful, cowardly and sneaky.
Dromgoole's work has been excessively used in recent decades. There are so many more sources to document Melungeon history not just Dromgooles. The archeologist has brought forth a lot more information that documents the inhabitants that occupied the lands over time.
Another great source for Americas earliest history can be found in the records in foreign lands.
Melungeon hugs,
Helen
